Europan 14, Keep working (Kriens, CH) -
Professional European Competition, 2017The sheds of the old factory Bell, compose of several volumes constructed through the last hundred years, is one of the oldest industrial site of the Lucerne area. The establishment of this factory in the city of Kriens led to the development of a residential town around it. From the urban point of view, the Project Site represents the most consolidated urban block in Kriens. This proposal seeks to recover the historical gravity centre role that traditionally had. This proposal aims for the preservation of a great part of the existing buildings. If the productive city argues for the transformation of mono-functional residential areas, and for the approach of the industrial areas to the city, for economic and social reasons. The preservation of the industrial spaces seems relevant for the appropriation of new industrial uses. Proposing new spaces in the old structure, re-cladding, opening connections and programming a diverse program of production, innovation and cultural exchange, for the multifunctional city under the historic mass of the factory Bell. In two phases “KEEP WORKING”, proposes the gradual removal of the heavy industry, replaced by a new forms of production, which combine research, design, production and consumption.
